More and more devices these days are moving away from the traditional Keyboard-Mouse interface to Touch based input. Microsoft for a long time has been supporting Touch based input since Windows Vista and Touch support has been built right into Windows 7.

Microsoft had initially demoed a set of 6 Applications to showcase the Touch Support for Windows 7 and to help people get accustomed with the touch interface.

This touch pack till now wasn’t available for Non-OEMs and was only made available specially for OEM based Touch Devices.

Microsoft has now made the Touch Pack available freely for any Windows 7 based Device that supports Touch input.

Running multiple Operating Systems on Mobile Phones has for long being a forte of Windows Mobiles. A linux hacker named Planetbeing was  working on an Android port for the iPhone and has managed to get it working.

Check out the Video below of Android working successfully on an Apple iPhone  :

Easy instructions on installing this port are not yet available. And this Hack currently works on only iPhone 2G and will easily support iPhone 3G. However for the iPhone 3GS to support this will take some more efforts.

Dell Lightning : Probably the Best WP7 so far

Posted by Tanmay | Posted in Gadgets, Microsoft, Mobiles, Windows Phone 7 | Posted on 22-04-2010

Dell is a well known brand when it comes to Notebooks and PC’s but it was never into the Mobile market. Sure it was one of the first to provide sleek looking PDAs but it never ventured into the Mobile Phone market.

Dell’s entry into the Mobile Phone market is pretty big. Dell is known for its great designs and aesthetics.

Recently there have been a lot of leaks of various Dell devices like the Android based Dell tablet. This leak confirms Dell’s foray into the Windows Phone market with a Device titled ‘Lightning’

The Dell Lightning looks totally amazing with looks which seem far better than most HTC Phones even the HTC HD2 if I may add.

Looks is not the only department which makes the Dell Lightning probably the best WP7 so far but the specs too. Take a look at the current Specs :

  • 1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor
  • WVGA 4.1-inch OLED display
  • 5 megapixel Autofocus Camera
  • 1GB of flash
  • 512MB RAM
  • 8GB of storage
  • GPS
  • Accelerometer
  • compass
  • FM radio
  • Full Flash support including Video Playback

This device is expected for a Q4 2010 Release but IMO will get pushed to Q1 2011.

Windows Phone 7’s Copy Paste Alternative

Posted by Tanmay | Posted in Microsoft, Windows Phone 7 | Posted on 21-04-2010

Microsoft’s announcement of Windows Phone 7 exceeded many people’s expectations with regards to the System Model being totally overhauled and built up from scratch.

Microsoft seems to have taken Apples tried and tested methods way too seriously by excluding Copy-Paste initially. Although Microsoft did promise after the initial outcry that Copy-Paste will be added at  a later stage.

For now the only way to share data is using Microsoft’s Smart Sensing technology which supposedly senses what data the user will likely share or use within other applications in the phone.

For a better understanding of this concept check out the Video below :

Smart-Sensing vs Copy and Paste in Windows Phone 7

iPad Jailbreak sooner than expected

Posted by Tanmay | Posted in Apple | Posted on 06-04-2010

iPad has just been launched a couple of days back and news of it being jailbreaked are already spreading fast!

A well known iPhone Hacker ‘MuscleNerd‘ found the exploit and implemented it within 24rs of iPads launch! An exploit being found so soon means that an automated Jailbreak solution will be out very soon.

Most of us are familiar with the process of Jailbreaking and the things it offers. Custom Themes, Widgets and many other 3rd Party applications which are denied from the App Store. iPad will offer much more in terms of customizations after jailbreaking than whats possible on the iPhone due to its screen size.

A lot of real estate is been wasted and it will be very exciting on how the Homebrew community  makes use of that.

The exploit seems to be Browser driven and grants you Root access and ability to run unsigned applications.

The availability of this jailbreak will take some time as they will probably wait for Apple to issue a firmware update first and then make the jailbreak public.

Keep checking back for more information on this!

Check out the Proof of Concept of the Jailbreak below :

Windows Phone 7 Series ROM for HTC HD2 to be available soon [Now with Video Proof]

Posted by Tanmay | Posted in Windows Phone 7 | Posted on 28-03-2010

A very popular Site’s Administrator has leaked the information about a Windows Phone 7 Series ROM for HTC HD2. He has provided snaps of the HD2 running WP7S, but that doesn’t mean anything. It could even be simple pictures being viewed via the HD2’s Album Application.

But there’s some credit to the Source as it’s been put up by the Admin of that Forum.

WP7S is still a long way from release and if HD2 is the 1st Device to run it, looking at the current sales of the HD2 in the US, those sales will certainly get even a higher boost due to this.

Is it really true or not? We’ll know soon enough now!

*Update* One of the Moderators at XDA has Confirmed this! Now we all wait with bated breath!

*Update 2* Now updated with Video.

It’s been said that at this moment its not possible to revert back to Windows Mobile 6.5 once you install this WP7S ROM as the Bootloader and AMSS (Advanced Mobile Subscriber Software) have been modified!

Check out Video, more snaps and link after the break.

Windows Phone 7’s ‘Metro’ UI has received positive response from the community. Many would love to have this UI on their Windows PC’s cause the major feature of Metro being the focus on the actual Content by usage of letters in bold and big font.

The Zune Music Player and Windows Media Center has parts of this UI.

fediaFedia was inspired by this and has come up with a Windows Phone 7 Theme for Windows Vista/7. The Theme is still in works and should be available shortly.
